The Philosophy of Ruachiatry

The word Ruachiatry derives from the Hebrew “Ruach,” meaning spirit, breath, or divine wind, and the Greek “iatros,”meaning healing. Together, they form a discipline devoted to the restoration of both the inner and outer life — a reminder that true holistic health must go beyond merely the physical, biological aspect of humans and must include the spirit and soul as well.

Founded by psychiatrist and professor Dr. Thomas McCormack, Ruachiatry offers a 12-step framework that integrates faith, mindfulness, and evidence-based practice. Its guiding principle is drawn from 2 Corinthians 10:4 — “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal…” — affirming that the most profound battles of healing are often spiritual ones.

In Dr. McCormack’s 12 week pilot study, participants suffering from severe treatment-resistant Major Depressive Disorder (TRD) experienced a 47.6% reduction in depressive symptoms as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory II — underscoring the power of integrating spirituality into the healing process and the need for further studies.

While rooted in Judeo-Christian tradition, Ruachiatry honors the wisdom of global healing philosophies — from Hindu Ayurveda and Buddhist mindfulness to Islamic and Judaic teachings — recognizing that each path shares a common truth: tapping into the transcendent across many faith traditions and cultures offers time-tested healing.

Ruachiatry invites patients and healthcare professionals alike to reconnect with that truth. To rediscover hope, balance, and meaning — and to begin the journey toward holistic health by integrating mind, body, and spirit.

It says in the Bible of Queen Esther that she was there 'for a time such as this.' That is how I feel about Dr. Thomas McCormack's 12 Steps of Ruachiatry."
