Steps 1-3: Acceptance, Searching, Submission
Step 1: Acceptance and Commitment
Accepted that we were powerless over our illness and made a decision to take a stand.
Step 2: Searching
We earnestly embarked on a journey to fulfill our personal responsibility to discover the Truth regarding a spiritual power greater than ourselves who could give us hope of either restoring
our health or enabling us to cope with our sickness.
Step 3: Submission
Once identified, we decided to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
Steps 4-9: Radical Renovation
Step 4: Traumas and Lies
We made a list of circumstances, individuals, or groups that had harmed us, what they had done, and
the subsequent lies we had believed about ourselves as a result.
Step 5: Choosing Forgiveness
We ranked the degree of resentment & bitterness we still harbor and asked God to give us the strength
to forgive those who hurt us, be they individuals, groups, or institutions
Step 6: Traumas We Inflicted Upon Others
We made a list of all people we have harmed and admitted to God, ourselves, and to another human
being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Step 7: Amends
We became willing to make amends to people we had harmed & then made direct amends to such
people wherever possible and appropriate.
Step 8: From Fear to Faith
We made a list of things we fear and consciously chose to cast our cares upon God, having faith that
He is both willing and able to help those who humbly seek Him.
Step 9: Vigilant and Sober
We made a decision to vigilantly guard our mind and to cease the use of any and all mind or mood
altering substances unless prescribed by a physician.
Steps 10-12: Drawing Closer to God
Step 10: Seeking Spiritual Wisdom
We made a decision to forego or entirely relinquish any effort to gain understanding, knowledge, or
wisdom apart from the orthodox teachings attributed to our Higher Power.
Step 11: Holy Scripture
We read holy scripture regularly and asked God for the will & strength to obey it.
Step 12: Prayer and Meditation
We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we
understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
